Sunlight & Sleep. What's the Connection??

Getting a dose of sunlight during the day can help you sleep better at night! Why you may ask?

Light signals to the hypothalamus, which helps control your sleep cycles like a big master clock, to wake up and be alert. It triggers daytime hormones that in turn helps regulate your internal body clock so that your body knows when it’s day and when it’s night.

If you’re not getting enough sunlight in the day and getting too much artificial light in the evening/night it can effect your bodies natural ability to sleep well at night.

Sunlight Tips:

  1. Get out in the sunlight as early as possible as this is when your body needs to know it’s morning - ideally between 6am and 8.30am and for half an hour.

  2. Avoid the shades, if you can, as they block the sunlight from hitting your light receptors.

  3. Have a break outside during the day, perhaps try having a meeting outside or lunch.

  4. Sunlight is the ideal, however if you can’t get outside try sitting near a window or you could try a light box specifically designed to give daylight type light.
