Does Sleep Impact Your Weight?

HOW DOES SLEEP IMPACT YOUR WEIGHT?

EXTRA CALORIES

When you're sleep deprived you have decreased levels of the hormone ‘Leptin’ in your system. Leptin is known as the satiety hormone and plays an important role in regulating your appetite. If you’re not getting enough sleep your brain looks for extra calories to keep it going and knows that it can get these calories quickly from food such as cake and crisps.

REDUCED SELF CONTROL

When you’re sleep deprived you also have reduced activity in the centers of your brain that are associated with self-control and rational decision making. That’s why you crave sugary and salty foods when you’re tired and normally fail to restrain yourself from eating them.

GET SOME ZZZZZ’s

So….even if you eat nutritious whole foods and exercise regularly you’ll still need to prioritize getting the right amount of good quality sleep if you want to stand a good chance of losing weight or maintaining a healthy weight.
