Sleep Tip - Technology

Rachael Forsberg

Technology is amazing at keeping us connected. If you’re using it before bed or during the night, how does it affect your sleep?

In two main ways:

1. It keeps your mind stimulated.

Do you find yourself doing any of these in the hour before bed? Mindless scrolling, noticing an important email just before bedtime, getting caught up in an exciting film/series episode or reaching to use your phone if you wake in the night…. Our minds can struggle to switch between fast paced technology input and restful sleep therefore your sleep may be delayed, disturbed or reduced in quality.

2. It tricks your brain into thinking it’s still daytime.

Blue light from screens tricks the brain into thinking its daytime and daytime hormones, such as cortisol, are produced. This may have the effect of keeping you awake longer or giving you a lower quality of sleep.
